DRAWING
Multi
Media & the Life Model (Mia Clark) You will need to bring a sheet or
two of white tissue paper or other interesting light papers for collaging and
some white glue (eg aquadhere) or acrylic medium. For advanced students please bring your usual
drawing or painting materials. Suggested materials: whatever water based paints
you have (acrylic or watercolour or gouache or coloured inks – a red, blue
& yellow will be fine, but the more the merrier), Black Ink, a dip pen;
brushes (no1, no 5 rounds no 1, no 6, no 12 flat), a wash brush, a sponge,
palette knife, 300gsm watercolour paper in A3 pad or sheets, bulldog clip,
masking tape, scissors, 2bpencil, kneadable eraser, paper blender and whatever
dry media
Introductory
Drawing (Jane James) Pencils [HB – 6B]; two sticks
compressed round charcoal; one medium thick
stick willow charcoal; black drawing ink [that will flow through a pen]; round tapered watercolour
brush with good regathering capabilities
[ie. No. 6 taklon brush]; nib and nib
holder [one pointed split nib]; butchers paper [3 large sheets]; cartridge
paper [10 large sheets or A3 sketchbook]; two large, medium rough sheets of paper; one piece
lightweight card [el cheapo is good];
plastic eraser [for pencil]; gum
rubber [for charcoal - not the same as a kneadable eraser); ruler;
rough sandpaper; found objects for dipping into ink and drawing with [day one].

Life
Drawing (Carolyn
Gardiner) 1 black
conte crayon; 1 white conte
crayon; 1 only graphite stick
(any grade); graphite pencils [2B, 4B, 6B, 8B]; black
water colour [tube]; pen & nib; (This nib is a plain drawing
nib, not a calligraphy one. Make sure you purchase
the holder and nib together otherwise they may not fit properly) black
drawing ink (preferably in a small bottle you can
dip the nib into); brush for wash [soft
– size 10-12, should return to a fine point];
dry brush [stiff – hog hair size 12 flat]; eraser [vinyl, not rubber]; Charcoal
- soft square – must be a luscious
rich black),and
willow (1 stick) and, compressed (round or flat); A3 cartridge
paper [pad or 30 sheets]; 4 sheets of A2
cartridge paper; 4 sheets of A3 university cartridge; 1
sheet of cotton rag paper [such as Reeves or Arches]; 1 sheet of grey pastel paper [ie. Canson or

The Power of Pastels (Mia Clark) Pastels:
boxed set of MYUNGO pastels are adequate to start exploring. Minimum 48 set
(the more the merrier). 3 sticks of Conte: white, sanguine,
black. A Charcoal Pastel or a stick of compressed charcoal.. A grey
faber castel kneadable eraser and soft white bread (for erasing) and a
small paper blender . Optional, a charcoal pencil. or mid brown pastel
pencil (conte a paris)
3 sheets of Canson Mi-Tientes paper, mid grey, mid tan and beige or light tan.
2 sheets of colorfix paper in strong colours, eg. blue,green or aubergine.1
Sheet of medium watercolour paper maybe 300gsm. A smoooth drawing board big
enough to take a half or whole sheet of paper ( Bunnings have 3mm MDF sheets
which do the job). 2 bulldog clips. Masking tape and a stanley or craft knife .Some sandpaper
to sharpen your conte sticks on. A packet of hand wipes, Tissues, Workable
Fixative.
Developing
Ideas with Mixed Media (Mia Clark) Make a list of any images/objects
that appeal to you. [eg. bones, eggs, windows, doorways, brick walls, dogs,
beetles, birds, weather, waves musical instruments...whatever] - Underline
several of the most appealing and find some pictures of those images to bring
to the workshop. You must have 2B
Pencil; eraser; A3 sketch pad or several large sheets of
cartridge paper (and maybe some paper for acrylics); water resistant Black felt tip pen; a box of coloured chalk; pastels; some water soluble pastels or pencils; a few acrylic paints (red, blue, yellow,
white and black); some acrylic gel
medium; a sheet of white tissue paper; some gladwrap; a range of paintbrushes (one flat 2 inch
brush, a no. 5 round, and some flat brushes - #10 and #5); salt; a
palette; 2 water containers; craft knife (and maybe scissors); small squeeze bottle of white glue; and bring as much mixed media as you have in
the way of water based paints and drawing materials.
Techniques of Portrait Painting (Frances McKennariey) Acrylic
paints or oil paints (as long as the turps is low odour or odourless) -
Usual selection of basic colours (Cool and warm reds, blues and yellows; ochre;
raw umber; and white); a couple of flat hog hair brushes, size 12 or
larger; a couple of medium size brushes; a small round or filbert brush; 2
bulldog clips; 3 sheets of cartridge; I stick of charcoal (Willow); palette;
canvas on stretcher or board or even loose; cloths; jar with lid; notebook and
pen if you like taking notes.

Gum

quality images to use (a4 prints from an injet printer will be fine).

(white or plain coloured); cutting

rubber or disposable gloves; plus
your usual drawing materials; wear closed -in shoes.
3D
Introduction to Silversmithing ( Rebecca Ward) Notebook,
pencil, scissors, ruler, tracing paper, pencils, paper) plus closed-in shoes to
be worn at all times (joggers, boots, laceups - not sandles or slip-ons) and avoid
flowing, loose garments; long hair must be tied up.
Low-tech
Casting for Silver Jewellery ( Rebecca Ward) Notebook, pencil, scissors,
ruler, tracing paper, pencils, paper) plus closed-in shoes to be worn at all
times (joggers, boots, laceups - not sandles or slip-ons Student absolutely MUST WEAR CLOSED SHOES.) Avoid flowing, loose
garments; long hair must be tied up. Students to bring any clean (no solder)
silver scrap you have (you will be provided with silver granules for casting but any extra you bring
can also be melted down and used for casting so you may be able to do more or
larger pieces)
Ceramics: Introduction to Hand-building (Stephen Roberts) Notebook,
pencil and ruler; wear closed-in
shoes, old clothes and avoid
flowing, loose garments. An apron is recommended.
Introduction

Figurative
Sculpture (David Lowe) Students need to have an inexpensive
turntable (Pottery Supplies or any variety outlet, eg Crazy Carks etc $11
or less) as well as a clay modelling tool set, (eg Oxlades, 226 Grey St South Bank $5.90 for a set of
9 tools)
Expressive
Clay Sculpture (Karl de Waal) All materials are provided. Wear closed-in shoes, old clothes
and avoid flowing, loose garments. An apron is recommended.
Pop
Plants (Thierry Auriac) Small
cutters & scalpel, calculator, pencils, erasers, rulers, a range of
cardboards and 4-5mm white corflute and 2mm coloured corflute.
Hebel
Carving (Allin Dwyer) Artists Journal (sketchbook) and
pencil, Protective
clothing; enclosed footwear; pva glue; and any old disused chisels or rasps
that you may have.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Creative Video (Andrew Forsyth) Basic computer skills, plus your own DV camera (Movie Maker
compatible) and USB lead (memory card readers available), email address for
course related questions, bring your own lunch. Non-essential but very helpful:

COLLAGE
Introductory
Collage (Thierry Auriac) Pair of scissors, scalpel, cutter (X-Actor
blade), pair of tweezers, glue (eg aquadhere), a small brush, a glue stick, double sided tape (poster tape), at least 12
sheets of paper A4 and larger, at least 2 large sheets of board (paste or
strawboard – which will be used as a cutting board), I or 2 large sheets of cardboard or corflute,
5 sheets of tracing paper. Please also bring along any interesting
magazines – eg. Vogue, Marie Clair, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar etc.
ART MATERIALS are not available at Brisbane
