MATERIALS LIST – WINTER 2010

 

As there are no shops close by, please bring snacks or lunch.  BYO cup for coffee and tea. 

DRAWING

Life Drawing (Carolyn Gardiner)

1 black conté crayon;  1 white conté crayon;  1 only graphite stick (any grade);  graphite pencils [2B, 4B, 6B, 8B];  black water colour [tube];  pen & nib; (This nib is a plain drawing nib, not a calligraphy one.  Make sure you purchase the holder and nib together otherwise they may not fit properly)  black drawing ink (preferably in a small bottle you can dip the nib into);  brush for wash [soft – size 10-12, should return to a fine point];  dry brush [stiff – hog hair size 12 flat];  eraser [vinyl, not rubber];  Charcoal : soft square (must be a luscious rich black – sometimes called black pastel), and willow (1 stick), and compressed (round or flat);  A3 cartridge paper [pad or 30 sheets];  4 sheets of A2 cartridge paper; 1 sheet of cotton rag paper [such as Reeves or Arches];  1 sheet of grey pastel paper [ie. Canson or Ingres];  1 sheet of watercolour paper [cold pressed]; 2 bulldog clips.

The Power of Pastels (Mia Clark)

Pastels: boxed set of MYUNGO pastels are adequate to start exploring. Minimum 48 set (the more the merrier).  3 sticks of conté: white, sanguine, black.  A Charcoal Pastel or a stick of compressed charcoal.. A grey faber castel kneadable eraser and soft white bread (for erasing) and a small  paper blender . Optional, a charcoal pencil. or mid brown pastel pencil (conté a paris) 3 sheets of Canson Mi-Tientes paper, mid grey, mid tan and beige or light tan. 2 sheets of colorfix paper in strong colours, eg. blue,green or aubergine.1 Sheet of medium watercolour paper maybe 300gsm. A smoooth drawing board big enough to take a half or whole sheet of paper ( Bunnings have 3mm MDF sheets which do the job). 2 bulldog clips. Masking tape and a stanley or craft knife .Some sandpaper to sharpen your conté sticks on. A packet of hand wipes. Tissues.

Introductory Drawing ( Mia Clark)

2B, 4B, 6B pencils, a grey Faber Castel kneadable eraser. Sharpener, Ruler, small Paper blender. A4 display folder. A3 cartidge paper pad (make sure the paper doesn't feel shiny or too smooth, a bit of tooth is best). A sheet of white canson mi tientes paper. An ink pen to dip in ink. 1 black conté stick and 1 stick of compressed charcoal or a charcoal pastel.. A couple of sheeets of large newsprint. Masking tape and/or bulldog clips.

Introductory Drawing (Sandra Ross)  2B, 4B, 6B pencils, an eraser, Sharpener, Ruler, A3 cartidge paper pad (make sure the paper doesn't feel shiny or too smooth, a bit of tooth is best). 1 black conté stick and sticks of compressed charcoal (willow, thin, and thick) Masking tape and/or bulldog clips.

Please also bring three pieces of fruit eg apples, pears, lemons etc.

PAINTING

Marine Art (Jane James)

Brushes [acrylic taklon or sable, various sizes from 1 Round to 25mm Flat];  water container;  palette;  small glass or plastic jars for the mixing of paint;  rags or paper towel;  masking tape OR bulldog clips OR household pegs;  small sea sponge;  feather;  toothbrush;  palette knife;  NT cutter or similar;  3 x A1 sheets of oil sketch paper;  1x pad of drawing cartridge;  acrylic paints [Cerulean;  Ultramarine / Prussian Blue;  Phthalo Blue;  Phthalo Green - Blue Hue;  Viridian;  Permanent Sap Green;  Cobalt green;  Burnt Sienna;  Raw Sienna;  Yellow Ochre;  Burnt Umber;  Red Oxide;  Paynes Grey;  Titanium White] and 1 bottle clear acrylic medium (runny).

Introductory Painting ~ Oil (Sally Duhig)

Plenty of old rags (preferably cotton rather then synthetic); Glass containers with lids and 1 empty tin, eg tomato tin ; A palette (this is one of your most important pieces of equipment - the bigger the better!);
Brushes: - for oil painting you simply need a small range of square and round tipped bristle brushes (Hogs hair is fine - 2 x size 12, 4 x size 10, 2 x size 4 flat tips, plus 1 x synthetic size 4 tapered brush for fine line work). 1 broad soft brush for glazing. Your own acrylic paints are great for a fast drying first layer.
Oil Paints: -if you are sensitive to fumes and wish to avoid all solvent based paints you may wish to buy the water mixable oils by Winsor and Newton- research on the website winsornewton.com and be advised by the shop you purchase from (ask about a suitable fast drying impasto medium). Other websites are artspectrum.com.au and archivaloils.com. The names provided are for Art Spectrum (AS) paints: Lemon Yellow (cool), Spectrum yellow (warm), Golden Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Spectrum Red Deep (cool), Spectrum Vermillion(warm), Phthalo Blue (cool) Ultrmarine Blue (warm), Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, Indian Yellow (transparent), Raw Umber and Titanium White or Archival Fast Drying White.
Supports: - A3 pad of Canson oil painting paper;
Solvents and mediums can cause irritation in sensitive people. For everyone's comfort please ensure you bring odourless products-please do not bring low odour turpentine form the hardware shop. Art Spectrum (AS) odourless solvent for brush washing or consider household vegetable oil and soap; either AS odourless lean medium and AS odourless fat medium and Archival Odourless Lean Medium OR AS Liquol Painting Medium. For impasto effects Archival (brand) Smooth Gel Medium. A small bottle of household vegetable oil for protecting and cleaning your hands and cleaning brushes.
Extras: You will need an A3 sketchbook (this can also be a journal or scrapbook of ideas and inspirations as well as working out compositions and tonal studies); Some basic drawing materials (eg charcoal, graphite pencils etc); At least one palette knife; A pot of gesso (this is a white priming paint with chalk added to provide an opaque primed surface to paint on)..

Introductory Watercolour (Allin Dwyer)

Basic watercolours either tubes- Cotmans range: cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, raw sienna, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, viridian OR a small set of Windsor & Newton watercolour pans, Mixing palette, Two soft brushes- round imitation sable eg, Roymac golden sable No 8 and No3, 2B pencil and eraser, 1 sheet of watercolour paper 300gsm rough Saunders or Arches OR one A4 block of same a water container and tissues.

Intro Painting - Acrylic  OR Paths to Abstraction (Robert Andrews)

Acrylic paints in either 75ml tubes or 250ml pots (or similar) in these colours - titanium white, black, Pthalo blue, Crimson, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine blue, Scarlet OR Cadmium red, Cadmium yellow. Also, a water container, a cleaning rag, a palette (e.g. recycled ice cream lid), an A-5 visual diary, two graphite pencils (e.g. 1 x 2B & 1 x 4B), a pad of A-3 cartridge paper (for colour mixing exercises and painted studies), and a range of flat-ended bristle brushes (e.g. one each of sizes 1 to 12). A couple of house painting brushes (e.g. 1 @ 25mm wide and 1 @ 50mm wide). A pad or either A-3 or A-2 canvas paper will also be needed.

COLLAGE

Collage (Thierry Auriac) Pair of scissors, scalpel, cutter (X-Actor blade), pair of tweezers, glue (eg aquadhere), a small brush, a glue stick, double sided tape (poster tape), at least 12 sheets of paper A4 and larger, at least 2 large sheets of board (paste or strawboard – which will be used as a cutting board), I or 2 large sheets of cardboard or corflute, 5 sheets of tracing paper.  Please also bring along any interesting magazines – eg. Vogue, Marie Clair, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar etc.

CHILDREN

Children’s Holiday Art Workshop (Deborah Cavallaro) 

Please bring: morning tea; lunch if necessary; a water bottle for drinking water; and wear an apron or old clothes.

PRINTING

Monoprinting   David Nixon

4 sheets 250gsm paper Arches or Stonehenge, 10 sheets of acid free tissue paper, cutting blade, cutting mat, scissors, rags, rubber or disposable gloves, plus your usual drawing materials, wear closed-in shoes.

Experimental Printmaking – Nancy Brown

Gloves, rags, 250gsm paper (3 sheets),  drawing materials and brushes,  drawing/sketch pad,  scissors,  craft knife with sharp blades.

Fabric Printing (Nancy Brown)

4 metres of 100% cotton fabric (white or plain coloured);  cutting blade;  cutting mat;  scissors;  rags;  rubber or disposable gloves;  plus your usual drawing materials;  wear closed-in shoes, avoid flowing and loose garments, and long hair is to be tied up.

Intro Fabric Printing (Jaydee Dearness)

4 metres of 100% cotton fabric (white or plain coloured) Please make sure that fabric brought from printing is of natural fibre, washed and ironed for ease of printing over the weekend: cutting blade;  cutting mat;  scissors;  rags;  rubber or disposable gloves; .Please also bring ideas for a A4 size stencil design and a 15x15cm linocut design,  You will also need imagery/photo (black and white) for photoemulsion stencil plus your usual drawing materials;  wear closed-in shoes, avoid flowing and loose garments, and long hair is to be tied up.

Relief Printing (Wim de Vos)

2 lino tiles (30 X 30), set of cutting tools 5-6 in a packet or other (speedball), utility cutter – 1cm width, wooden spoon, packet of disposable gloves, 2B, 4B pencils, 2 sheets of carbon paper, small spatula, cotton rags for cleanup. 2 sheets Japanese paper, 2-3 sheets of Stonehenge paper, 3 sheets of cartridge paper, 6 sheets of butcher’s paper.

3D

Contemporary Environmental Sculpture (Caselle Mountford) 0.9mm Tie wire, string and wool, secateurs & pliers, natural materials (leaves, paper bark etc.) 

Nature is Your Paint Brush (Lily Karmatz)

Visual diary/note pad, cartridge paper, scissors, PVA glue, pen, pencil, charcoal, black ink, pastel, and a camera if you have one.

Figurative Sculpture (David Lowe)

Students need to have an inexpensive turntable (Pottery Supplies or any variety outlet, eg Crazy Carks etc  $11 or less) as well as a clay modelling tool set, (eg Oxlades, 226 Grey St South Bank $5.90 for a set of 9 tools)

Introductory Silversmithing (Dan Cox) 

Notebook, pencil, fine permanent marker, glue stick and ruler; wear closed-in shoes, avoid flowing and loose garments, and long hair is to be tied up.

Silversmithing with Textile Techniques (Renata Fojtikova) Notebook, pencil, fine permanent marker, glue stick and ruler, thin metal knitting needles, crochet hooks, sewing needles and colourful sewing threads; wear closed-in shoes, avoid flowing and loose garments, and long hair is to be tied up.

Alternative Material [Acrylic] in Jewellery (Dan Cox) Notebook, pencil, fine permanent marker, glue stick and ruler; wear closed-in shoes, avoid flowing and loose garments, and long hair is to be tied up.

Etching in Jewellery  (Rebecca Ward)  Students to bring: an old long sleeved shirt and trousers (apron is also good if you have one), covered shoes, drawings and design ideas if you have any (otherwise these will be provided).

Handbuilt Pottery (Stephen Roberts)

Hebel Carving (Karl de Waal) Artists Journal (sketchbook) and pencil, Protective clothing; enclosed footwear; pva glue; and any old disused chisels or rasps that you may have.

Introduction  to Mosaic (Karl de Waal) Equipment and materials are provided, but participants should bring any bits of pebbles or broken things (crockery etc) that they have and may like to incorporate in your mosaic.

Digital SLR Camera essential;  Note book & pen;  USB memory stick (a basic understanding of Microsoft Windows is also required).
