News from Brisart.org

Semester 2 is off to a record breaking start with some 480 enrolments in 48 classes across a broad range of visual arts areas including sculpture, painting, drawing, jewellery making, art history, printmaking, portraiture, watercolour mosaic and photography. Now, the Spring workshop program is online with a selection of 45 workshops available for enrolments from tomorrow (25 August)
>>> Spring.

New to the workshop program is Creative Video with Andrew Forsyth.
Did you know that making digital movies can be amazingly simple and fun? This course is for people who have basic computer skills and their own DV camera. Over two week-ends you can learn basic video camera skills to translate your ideas into images and create original videos. Then learn to burn your movie to DVD or publish to the web and share with your family and friends. If you have been using your video and have specific problems you’d like addressed, Andrew would love to hear from you before the course so he can tailor it to your needs >>> Creative Video.

Another unique offering for spring is the annual Moreton Island Camp with Stephen Newton.
Be inspired by the tranquil beauty of this unique island wilderness 40 kms off the Qld coast. Art tuition is offered by
Brisbane> artist and sculptor Stephen Newton, who will guide students in exploring aspects of the natural environment as inspiration for experimental and process based mixed media artworks. Transport, camp accommodation and meals are included >>> Moreton Island Art Camp.

Spring is proving to be a highly successful time for BIA members –
Lyn Derrick and Lee Camilleri have had their artwork selected for exhibition at the Kobe Biennale 2009 >>> “Art in a Container” International Competition Japan.

 “The Installation of drawings and multi-media addresses the Biennale theme of cultural practice and global environment. Might I Not Hear Your Voice? – the title of the installation of drawings of whale flukes and Eastern Curlews presented in a shipping container, responds to this theme and aims to promote environmental awareness through the power and potential of art” (Lyn Derrick ).

The Biennale opens 3 October to
23 November 2009. Lyn and Lee hope to present the Biennale entry in the shipping container, on its return from Japan, in the BIA grounds at the beginning of December.

Congratulations to BIA Chairperson Greg Packer, whose work was selected for hanging as a finalist in the Tattersall’s art prize for landscape.
Also congratulations to tutors Jane James and Nameer Davis as finalists in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize >>>.
Their paintings will be exhibited at the Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition, 19 August - 4 October 2009, at the Caloundra Regiona lArt Gallery

The work will be one of a number of sculptures to be placed along the Currumbin>Beach> ocean walkway. The exhibition which runs from 11 – 20 September, includes twilight sculpture walks, artist talks and sculpture workshops.
