MATERIALS LIST SEMESTER TWO 2010

 

These are the materials required for your first class. As there are no shops close by, please bring snacks or lunch. BYO cup for coffee and tea.

 

PAINTING

Drawing & Painting for the Raw Beginner (Sally Duhig) Chromacryl acrylic paint tubes: - Warm Red, Cool Red, Warm Yellow, Cool Yellow, Warm Blue, Cool Blue, White, Black;  Palette, Water container (e.g. Bucket);  Rags;  Bristle Brushes in a variety of sizes (flat or round);  an A2 pad of Cartridge Paper or 20 sheets of A2 Cartridge Paper;  A4 Visual Diary;  4B Pencil;  Sharpener;  Eraser;  Scissors;  Masking Tape;  2 Bulldog Clips;  1 stick of Compressed Charcoal; a cake of Soap.

Painting 1 (Deborah Cavallaro) A4 Visual diary;  1 Large canvas pad A2 size (10 sheets);  Flat bristle hog hair brushes - No.s 12, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0;  Talklon brushes - ¾ , ½, ¼, 1/8 inch;  Large area bristle brush - 2 inches wide;  Acrylic paints - 500ml tub White, 250ml tubes of cool yellow, warm yellow, warm red, cool red, warm blue, cool blue, raw umber, black, paynes grey (No Mont Marte or Art Culture paints please);  1 container of impasto gel medium;  1 container of texture paste;  Flat palette with wells and disposable plastic plates; Gladwrap and paper towel;  Spray bottle for water;  Water container (e.g.; large yogurt container);  Rags;  small disposable plastic containers for mixing paint;  Masking tape;  1 medium Palette knife for mixing and painting.

Painting 1 OR Painting 2 (Robert Andrews) Acrylic paints in either 75ml tubes or 250ml pots (or similar) in these colours - titanium white, black, Pthalo blue, Crimson, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine blue, Scarlet OR Cadmium red, Cadmium yellow. A list of additional suggested colours will be given out during the first class for the semester. Also needed are a water container, cleaning rag, a palette (or two or three, e.g. recycled icecream lids), an A-5 visual diary (for some drawing exercises and note-taking), two graphite pencils (e.g. 1 x 2B & 1 x 4B), a pad of A-3 cartridge paper (for use in some colour mixing exercises) and a range of flat-ended bristle brushes (e.g. one each of sizes 1 to 12). As the semester progresses students will be asked to obtain and use a pad of A-3 or A-2 canvas paper and occasionally some stretched canvases. A list of other suggested brush types will also be given out early in the semester.

Painting 2 (Sally Duhig) Your usual painting materials; papers, visual diary and stationary + an A2 pad of Canson (brand) oil/acrylic paper.  OR

A4 visual diary; A3 block cartridge paper; A2 Canson (brand) block of oil/acrylic paper; palette; palette knife; large water container (bucket); cotton rag; student quality acrylic paint, eg, Chromacryl- cool red, warm red, cool blue, warm blue, cool yellow, warm yellow, white, burnt sienna, yellow oxide, black; acrylic gel medium (matt or gloss); 4b pencil; eraser; masking tape; scissors; coffee cup.

Painting 2 (Sandra Ross) Your usual paint kit with the following colours (in oil or acrylic): yellow ochre, alizarin red, dioxazine purple, cobalt or cerelean blue. Also a support of some kind, and/or the Tutor will have university cartridge 300gsm for sale at $4 per sheet (which is suitable for painting). Also bring a pear or apple!

Painting 1 & 2 (Nameer Davis) 5 Brushes from size 0 up to 25 mm, palette knife or putty knife, Acrylic paints student quality.  Minimum requirement – red, blue, yellow, black, white, raw umber, Gel medium (gloss or matt), Painting surfaces -  2 sheets of canvas embossed paper A1 size or A3 Canson oil/acrylic painting pad, One litre Water container, Painting cloth or paper towel, Plastic Palette with large and small recesses for mixing paint, If you think you may have any skin allergies to acrylic paint please bring disposable latex gloves or rubber gloves.

Painting 3 (Nameer Davis) OR (Benjamin Werner) OR Painting 4(Jill Barker) OR Studio Painting (Paul Milburn OR Nameer Davis or Sally Cox)

Your usual painting materials.

Intro  Watercolour (Mia Clark) 2 sheets of 300gsm medium watercolour paper, Student quality (Cotman is a good brand) tubes of watercolour paint – red, blue and yellow (DO NOT BUY MARIES OR MONTMATRE), masking tape, scissors, drawing boards, palette with large recesses for mixing paint, tissues or paper towels, water containers x2, pencil or eraser, brushes: medium (4-6) round and large flat (8-10) and masking fluid

Introductory Watercolour (Allin Dwyer) Visual diary;  1 sheet 300gsm Watercolour paper (rough – Saunders or Arches);  roll of masking tape;  a good quality watercolour brush (round, No. 8, 10 or 12 – e.g. Roymac, imitation sable);  mixing palette;  2 water containers (e.g. plastic cups);  2B pencil;  soft eraser;  a box of tissues;  Watercolour paints :  Cadmium Yellow Light,  Yellow Ochre,  Cadmium Red,  Alizarin Crimson,  Ultramarine Blue,  Viridian, Burnt Sienna (DO NOT BUY MARIES OR MONTMATRE).

Intermediate Watercolour (Allin Dwyer) Your usual painting materials
Marine Art (Jane James) Brushes [acrylic taklon or sable, various sizes from 1 Round to 25mm Flat];  water container;  palette;  small glass or plastic jars for the mixing of paint;  rags or paper towel;  masking tape OR bulldog clips OR household pegs;  small sea sponge;  feather;  toothbrush;  palette knife;  NT cutter or similar;  3 x A1 sheets of oil sketch paper;  1x pad of drawing cartridge;  acrylic paints [Cerulean;  Ultramarine / Prussian Blue;  Phthalo Blue;  Phthalo Green - Blue Hue;  Viridian;  Permanent Sap Green;  Cobalt green;  Burnt Sienna;  Raw Sienna;  Yellow Ochre;  Burnt Umber;  Red Oxide;  Paynes Grey;  Titanium White] and 1 bottle clear acrylic medium (runny).

Portraiture (Margaret Fredrickson) Palettes (White ice cream lids or wood palette that has been rubbed well with linseed oil),  palette knife,  medium (small bottle of linseed oil),  small bottle of household turpentine (for washing brushes),  a jar with lid,  brushes (1 small pointy brush, several flat bristle brushes), willow charcoal & paper,  support (eg. primed paper for week 1- glaze it, or your preferred surface, with thin yellow ochre or grey or grey/green so the white base shows through),  paints (oils preferred, though acrylics will be acceptable –  yellow ochre,  cadmium yellow,  crimson,  cadmium red,  black,  white,  burnt sienna;  optional:  oxide of chromium, lemon yellow,  burnt umber),  rags,  smock.

Portraiture (Mia Clark) 2B & 6B pencils and a pencil sharpener, a Faber Castel kneadable eraser, ruler, A3 pad of cartridge paper, masking tape, a small or medium sized paper blender [torchon], and an A4 display folder for notes. Mia will discuss some other materials needed for later in the course in class.

Creative Portraiture (David Paulson) Charcoal and oil pastels, cartridge paper, odourless turps and paint rags will be needed for the first few classes.

 

 

DRAWING

Observational Drawing (Benjamin Werner) 2B, 4B, 6B pencils, willow charcoal, eraser, A2 drawing pad of cartridge paper, Indian ink (black), 1 soft round brush #8, white & sanguine conte pencil.

Observational Drawing (Mia Clarke) 2B, 4B, 6B pencils, a grey Faber Castel kneadable eraser. Sharpener, Ruler, small Paper blender. A4 display folder. A3 cartridge paper pad (make sure the paper doesn't feel shiny or too smooth, a bit of tooth is best). A sheet of white canson mi tientes paper. An ink pen to dip in ink, 1 black conte stick and 1 stick of compressed charcoal or a charcoal pastel.. A couple of sheets of large newsprint. Masking tape and/or bulldog clips.

Expressive Drawing (Sandra Ross) or Drawing the Human Figure (Sandra Ross) 10 sheets university cartridge paper 300gsm approx A3 in size (purchase a block or sheets and cut up);  butchers paper, cartridge paper, A3 visual diary;  pencils or progresso graphite pencils [2B , 4B & 6B]; ink, quill, willow charcoal in variety of thicknesses, a hard eraser,  ruler;  a  flat #6  or #8 hog brushes, #12 round brush (cheaper version),  and any others you have ; acrylic paint (alizarin, paynes grey, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, white and any other colours you might have), Atelier liquefying medium, water container, knife (blade), any of the following if you already have them; pastels, charcoal

Exploring Drawing: from the expected to the unexpected & Exploring Drawing 2 (Nicole Sylvestre) Pencils biro, felt pens, erasers, masking tape, black drawing ink, a few brushes, aquarelle pens if you have them, a plain household candle, A3 drawing pad, tracing paper, glue. Magazine, newsprint, any other papers you like.pencils, conte, compressed charcoal, aquarelle pencils or crayons,  impasto medium.

Exploring Drawing 2 (Nicole Sylvestre) Gouache, inks, heavy quality paper A4, A2 and larger, plus everything used in Exploring Drawing (see above).

Drawing the Human Figure (Carolyn Gardiner) 1 x 2B Pencil, 1 x 4B Pencil, 1 x 6B Pencil, 2 x large bulldog/fold back clips, 20 sheets of A3 size cartridge paper.

PRINTING

Introductory Printmaking (David Nixon) Papers [BFK Rives;  Arches Vellum 250GSM or other 250gsm printing paper];  cutting blade;  cutting mat;  scissors;  rags;  rubber or disposable gloves;  plus your usual drawing materials;  wear closed -in shoes.

Introductory Printmaking (Nancy Brown) [The following items are available from Oxlades3846 0611 fax 3846 0622 www.Oxlades.com.au]:  a drypoint plate Mylar [these come in assorted sizes];  a Lino plate [these also come in assorted sizes];  a set of basic Lino cutting tools;  papers [BFK Rives;  Arches Vellum 250GSM or other 250gsm printing paper];  acid free tissue paper [5 sheets];  rubber gloves;  clean cotton rags;  large sketchbook and drawing materials;  craft knife;  scissors;  towel.

Fabric Printing (Nancy Brown) 2 metres of cotton or poly-cotton fabric, scissors, rags, rubber or disposable gloves, A4 sketch book plus choice of drawing materials, cutting blade & cutting mat (optional). Please wear closed in shoes

Etching (Wim de Vos) Notebook & pen; an etching plate (size = approx.  120 – 150 x 100mm); a small fine tooth bastard file.

Figurative Sculpture (David Lowe) Students need to have an inexpensive turntable (Pottery Supplies or any variety outlet, eg Crazy Carks etc  $11 or less) as well as a clay modelling tool set, (eg Oxlades, 226 Grey St South Bank $5.90 for a set of 9 tools)

Ceramics I OR Ceramics 2 (Stephen Roberts) Notebook & pencil. Wear old clothes & closed in shoes.

Sculpture I OR Sculpture 2 (Karl de Waal) Visual diary & pen, pencil, wear closed-in shoes and old clothes.

Mosaic and the 3D Form  (Karl de Waal) Bring any bits of pebbles or broken things (crockery etc) that you may like to incorporate in your mosaic,   palette knife;  sponge;  rags;  plastic gloves;  a pair of tile nippers (spring action with tungsten tip, $30hardware shops);  safety goggles or glasses;  (mosaic sheets, sealer and grout will be supplied as well as some tools.).

Metal Sculpture (Allin Dwyer) Visual diary & pen, pencil, wear closed-in shoes and old clothes.

Introductory Jewellery Making (Renata Fotjikova) OR  Introductory Silversmithing (Dan Cox) Notebook, pencil, scissors, gluestick and ruler; wear closed-in shoes and avoid flowing, loose garments; long hair must be tied up.

Intermediate Silversmithing (Dan Cox) Notebook, pencil, scissors, gluestick and ruler; wear closed-in shoes and avoid flowing, loose garments; long hair must be tied up.

 

 

PHOTOGRAPHY

Introductory Digital Photography (Nick West)  OR  Intermediate Digital Photography (Nick West)  Digital SLR Camera essential;  Note book & pen;  USB memory stick (a basic understanding of Microsoft Windows is also required).

Black & White Photography (Karen Milder) Note book & pen;  film based camera (if you have one);  film (Ilford HP5 400  or  Ilford Delta 400);  black & white photographic paper ( 25 or 100 sheets  of  5x7 or 8x10).
